Guidelines for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Speech Contest

  • Open to K-12 students.
  • One speech entry per grade level category per school. (Each school should establish a procedure to determine their entry for each grade level category.)
  • Speeches are to be written and delivered by the student speaker. Use of notes is optional.
  • Students must follow the theme, “What Are You Doing For Others?”
  • Speeches are timed and must not exceed 4 minutes. Judges will stop scoring the speech at 4 minutes. Speakers will be notified at the 4-minute time limit and given 15 seconds to complete their speech.
  • Student behavior should be attentive, courteous and supportive at all times.
  • Speakers will be judged using the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Speech Contest Judging Criteria.
  • All contest inquiries should be made to contest officials.
  • Contest officials reserve the right to counsel, deduct speaker points or disqualify speakers due to contest rule infractions.
